COLOMBO: Sri Lankan lawmakers chose six-time premier Ranil Wickremesinghe as president on Wednesday to serve the rest of his ousted predecessor's term, in a vote that risks reigniting political turmoil in the troubled South Asian island nation.

Wickremesinghe, who was a member of the country's parliament for 45 years, said in a speech he was happy the legislature picked him, but indicated he was keenly aware of the difficult work ahead.
