Court allows P22.6-B power rate increase

THE Supreme Court upheld an Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) decision granting Manila Electric Co.'s (Meralco) request to enforce a staggered power rate hike worth P22.64 billion after almost a decade of dormancy.

In a ruling penned by Associate Justice Jhosep Lopez, the high court ruled that the ERC followed the Automatic Adjustment of Generation Rate and System Loss Rates by Distribution Utilities (AGRA) Rules and the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 (Republic Act 9136 or the 'Epira Law').
