THE month of June saw the ceremonial lowering of the tunnel boring machine at the terminal site of the Metro Manila Subway Project in Valenzuela City headed by the Department of Transportation. The cylindrical-shaped Japanese-made machine designed to dig through the subway's path is already working. It will go through 17 stations from Valenzuela City to FTI in Taguig City, Parañaque City and NAIA Terminal 3 in Pasay City, and will extend further to north and south of Metro Manila. The 17 stations promise to reduce travel time between Quezon City and NAIA from 70 minutes to 35 minutes. It hopes to be partially operable by 2025.

The idea of having an integrated mass transit system within the National Capital Region is like a dream. Whenever we visit other cities in our travels, we take trains, subways or any public transit. My visits to our neighboring Asean cities like Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore always leaves me wondering why and how Manila got so left behind.
