THE call of Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Marat Pavlov on President-elect Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on June 13 was met with interesting comments and discussions from observers in and out of the country.
The common denominator of these commentaries centered on the ambassador's offer of Russian oil and whether importing such resources is in line with Marcos' "independent foreign policy" approach, particularly against the backdrop of the Ukraine-Russia war. It is important to note, however, that a potential import of Russian energy resources by Manila will not be motivated by narrowly defined politics, but on the government's desire to fulfil its responsibility to its people and their livelihood given the tumultuous international environment.
