Pursuing a green career

WHAT do young people want in a job? Most young people would want good pay, stability and opportunity. In the research 'Youthquake Meets Green Economy,' Accenture looked into the aspirations of young people, who would continue to play a significant role in the Asia-Pacific region over the next 10 years. Majority, or 89 percent, of the Filipino youth surveyed between 15 and 39 years old aspire to be working in the green economy within the next 10 years. For 60 percent of the young people in the Philippines, pursuing a career in the green economy is all about securing a long-term stable career. More than half of the Filipino respondents aspire to work in a growth sector (57 percent) that pays well and want to put green qualifications to good use (52 percent). Over 90 percent of young people in the Philippines care to work for a company they know is making a positive environmental impact.

The key findings and insights from the Philippine research provide a stark contrast to troll recruitment of fresh graduates with communications backgrounds. Dr. Jonathan Corpus Ong, Filipino disinformation researcher, in interviews with ABS-CBN, CNN Philippines and #TechKaMuna mentioned fresh graduates are being hired as social media trolls. Hopefully, this is the minority because it doesn't look like a stable job. According to Dr. Ong, trolling is a sideline. Nobody is really called a troll. It is not their formal job title. Sometimes, they are called PR associates, political strategists and social media community managers. They could also be deceived into getting this job because they thought they would do a job for corporate brands, 'but suddenly they are assigned to mean campaigns.' Some of these trolls operate from within corporate boardrooms. 'Trolls are not just located in the political strongholds of Ilocos or Davao. They are operating within respectable board rooms in Makati and that needs to be understood,' Ong added. An entry-level position would get at least P15,000 a month. Trolls rationalize and justify their job by saying this is just a sideline and that they needed the extra money. According to Ong, 'there's definitely an issue on ethics and morality.'
