Polish lawmakers scrap contested disciplinary system for judges

Warsaw, Poland: Poland's parliament Thursday (Friday in Manila) voted to dismantle a controversial Supreme Court disciplinary mechanism for judges that had been a sticking point with the European Union over concerns it undermined judicial independence.

The European Commission had notified Poland that it would have to abolish the chamber, among other things, in order to receive blocked post-Covid recovery funds of around 35 billion euros ($37 billion).
