Work values and beliefs

FLASHBACKS/INSIGHTS

'Our attitude toward our work is an expression of our values and beliefs.' – Anon

VALUES, value systems are common terminologies in our conversations. In discussions with our families or other people or co-workers in an organization, we often refer to values. How are values different from beliefs and how do they impact our behavior? One common topic of our times is our jobs or our want for a job. Granted our organization is a university, we would undergo an orientation to the institutional mission and vision and core values. We would hope to be happy in this new social environment — that the values of our academic work-world align with our own. An academic institution's culture is anchored on its values, which are meant to lead to organizational productivity. We try to soon adjust and uphold these values if we find meaning as we execute our job daily, and which takes up a lot of space in our life. Being satisfied with our work-world, we would identify with the university and commit ourselves to a lifetime career in this institution.
