IN the first year of the pandemic, there was no way for businesses to hold their usual company Christmas parties because of the danger in gathering together. We shifted our own Christmas party online but as much as possible, we wanted to keep the party features people had come to expect, including our "year that was" montage — a collection of photos and videos celebrating the activities, developments and successes for that year.
We usually would have made a video for this "look back" and we would have all watched it together at the in-person party. But because 2020 was such a strange year, our social media manager did something different. She created a virtual gallery where she uploaded the photos and videos. All of our employees had access to the gallery and they could control their own avatars as they walked around and explored the virtual space. It was, perhaps, one of those clear signs that things would never be "the same" again.
