YANGON: Myanmar on Sunday reopened the Yangon International Airport, more than two years after the Southeast Asian country suspended commercial flights in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. An airport official told Beijing-run Xinhua News Agency that a Singapore Airlines flight that arrived at about 9 a.m. (local time) on Sunday was the first to touch down at the gateway after reopening. Inbound passengers need to present proof of vaccination with a Ministry of Health-approved vaccine and a negative Covid-19 reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test as part of health protocols. Foreign travelers shall purchase Covid-19 medical insurance from Myanmar Insurance. They shall also wait at designated hotels to wait for the results of the RT-PCR test that Myanmar's health ministry shall send within about 24 hours. The country's infection numbers reached 612,545 as of Saturday, with the death toll at 19,434. Over 22.23 million people in Myanmar have been fully vaccinated as of April 9.
