AS I watch the tragic circumstances of people having to flee Ukraine as Putin's War rages, it is noticeable that the refugees try to bring their pets along — dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, sheep — as much as possible. These pets are all sentient beings and like humans they too can suffer from physical harm or displacement from their familiar environments.

While I do not want to replace the concern for human beings in the calamitous circumstances in Ukraine now, I would like to include animals in the equation of our compassion for suffering beings.
