SRA chief defends sugar importation

THE head of Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) defended the agency's decision to import 200,000 metric tons (MT) of sugar, saying this is necessary to address the expected supply shortfall of sugar and stabilize the commodity's price.

This, despite opposition from the leaders of the local sugar industry who described the SRA's move as 'very ill-timed' as sugar milling is at its peak. They also called the import volume 'way too much.'
