How many of you made carefully considered plans for a return to on-site work this year, only to be thwarted by the Omicron variant? The record-breaking Covid-19 cases we saw in the first few weeks of January were a dispiriting development following the equally record-breaking low numbers we posted in the final month of 2021. For some, it may be the surest sign that remote work is here to stay, regardless of the situation on the pandemic front.
Back in 2020, when millions of people around the world suddenly found themselves working full-time from home, spending habits accordingly changed. We saw a spike in online transactions and the use of e-wallets. Spending was down across all industries due to restrictions but when people were buying, they were purchasing groceries and items for their home entertainment systems as most found themselves spending an inordinate amount of time in their own houses. Back then no one was certain how long the work arrangement would last but a recent Deloitte study points to remote work outliving the pandemic.
