SINCE the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, data from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) show that around 800,000 OFWs – displaced and out of jobs because of a global economic slowdown – have returned to the Philippines.

Workers whose cash remittances once contributed significantly to the domestic economy suddenly found themselves without a lifeline.
