ON Nov. 29, 1991, Celia Diaz Laurel received the revered Woman for Peace award given by the Insieme Per La Pace (Together for Peace) Foundation. For this, she joined the esteemed roster of previous honorees like Queen Sophia of Spain, Raissa Gorbachev, former US first ladies Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush, Marcella Perez de Cuellar, President Violeta Chamurro of Nicaragua, and Queen Sirikit of Thailand. The award, as described by its founder and president Madame Mariapia Fanfani, is given to personalities who have not only promoted messages of peace but also actively worked toward it.
Thirty years later, we look back on this significant event and the reasons she was bestowed such honor not for posterity, but to serve as a source of inspiration and learning which we could valuably use today.
