THE United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea (Unclos III) established maritime zones. Unclos III was supposed to serve as the constitution of the oceans for the nations of the world who are signatories to the Convention.

The Convention enumerated maritime zones and their entitlements. An entitlement refers to the right to the established maritime zones. The Philippines must reckon the point of beginning of its maritime zones from straight baselines established around the archipelago of the Philippines.
