THIS year's Halloween was a bit more colorful than usual for some parts of the world, as the Earth experienced the effects of a strong geomagnetic or solar storm on October 30 and 31. While the consequences of the storm were much milder than feared, scientists have described the event as a "warning shot," a reminder that such an event can cause tremendous damage. It is a warning we should take seriously.
