I HAD struggled for minutes to write a question in the Zoom chat box during the September 23 press conference with the head of the European delegation to Manila, Ambassador Luc Veron, when after finally managing to post it, I made a fatal mistake, and the gadget I was using shut down, a problem alien to face-to-face press conferences.

But then again, a pre-pandemic press conference with the European Union delegation would have been held somewhere in Metro Manila with only Metro Manila-based journalists covering. While power failures, poor internet connection and technical problems would have little if any effect on a traditional press conference, virtual press conferences provide the opportunity for provincial-based media to have direct access to news events and sources that are relevant to their viewers, listeners and readers. They no longer have to rely on big national media to access such news. Now, provincial reporters can ask their questions directly to the news sources such as Ambassador Veron.
