Harsh weather affects Xinjiang cotton industry

XINJIANG:
Cotton growers in parts of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are facing some disruptions after extreme weather hit some major cotton-producing areas, including Alar. Industry insiders said that the impact could mean a loss of about 5 percent of this year's harvest.

'About 800-1,000 mu (66.66 hectares) of cotton fields were affected by the bad weather, equivalent to a loss of about 500,000 yuan to 600,000 yuan ($92,400),' a cotton grower in Alar surnamed Li told the Global Times on Thursday.
