EU sanctions Lebanon over political crisis

BEIRUT: The European Union said on Friday (Friday in Manila) it was ready to impose sanctions on Lebanon's ruling elite over the political crisis wracking the country, after adopting a legal framework for such measures.

The crisis has left Lebanon without a functioning government since the last one resigned after a massive explosion killed dozens and destroyed swathes of Beirut in August 2020.

TERRIBLE INCIDENT Civilians carry a victim at the explosion scene that hit the seaport of Beirut in Lebanon on Aug. 4, 2020. Fatalities from the very powerful blasts have reached 135 and investigators believe it originated from a stockpile of thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate delivered by Russia and stored in a clandestine warehouse near the seaport.
