IN this second part, we are featuring Arch. John Michael Elritz D. Gallo, who won first place in the Essay Writing Contest with his winning piece, titled: "The Filipino Home – The Soul of Filipino Architecture."
"Filipino architecture is interestingly a fusion of different local and foreign influences over the centuries, from the early Malay period until the American regime. It is also a collective term for various style types such as Tropical Filipino, Colonial Filipino, and Contemporary Filipino, among others. Thus, the architectural landscape in the Philippines becomes a contrast among traditional houses made of indigenous materials such as wood, bamboo, and grass; the massive colonial religious stone structures; the American mission-style and the modern buildings with their 20th century styles; and the present contemporary concrete urban structures. These styles, however varied, are united by a single element- the 'Filipino soul.'
