Stress and CPAs in public practice

PUBLIC accounting is one of the top 10 professions that are prone to burnout based on a Mayo Clinic study. As we all know, a person experiencing burnout is not only physically but also mentally and emotionally exhausted as well. While everybody can experience burnout, there are professions where burnout occurrences are higher and one of these is accountancy in public practice.

There was never a more stressful time for CPAs than during this pandemic. With the many new regulations from government agencies, more specifically from the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Securities and Exchange Commission, CPAs in public practice particularly had to be updated on the latest regulations while under pressure to meet deadlines and implement the new rules. Furthermore, fieldwork or in-office audits became limited, if not impossible, because of pandemic protocols.
