SEN. Ana Theresia "Risa" Hontiveros on Friday backed proposals to let the government assume control of the Luzon power grid to help curb recurring brownouts. Hontiveros agreed with the Department of Energy's (DoE's) proposal to the Senate amending the legislative franchise of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) and "reverting back to government" control of the grid to better manage power distribution and fix cybersecurity concerns in the power transmission sector.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will lead the 123rd Independence Day rites in Malolos, Bulacan today, June 12, 2021. The 76-year-old Duterte, the oldest elected Philippine president, will join the Malolos celebration "in person," his spokesman, Harry Roque Jr., said during a press briefing Friday. This will only be the second time Duterte will be attending an Independence Day observance since he assumed the presidency in 2016.

SENIOR citizens who have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) living in general community quarantine (GCQ) and modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) areas can now go outside their homes as long as they bring with them their vaccination cards. Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said on Friday the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) decided to ease restrictions on the
movements of the elderly during the meeting on Thursday.

BUSINESS: Fitch sees wider PH budget deficit
In Business, the Philippines will continue to run substantial budget gaps in the short term, according to Fitch Solutions, as the government strives to keep the economy afloat during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. The Fitch Group subsidiary said it maintains its projections for the Philippine government's fiscal shortfalls of 7.7 percent and 6.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
SPORTS: Bucks rally to edge Nets; Jazz beat Clippers anew
TOPPING Sports, the Milwaukee Bucks squeaked past Brooklyn Nets, 86-83, to cut the Nets' lead to 2-1 in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Bucks will try to even the series on Sunday (Monday in Manila) in Milwaukee. Khris Middleton scored 35 points, and Giannis Antetokounmpo added 33 for the Bucks. In Salt Lake City, the Utah Jazz outlasted the Los Angeles Clippers to take a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference semifinal series. Donovan Mitchell scored 37 points for Utah to become the first Jazz player with at least 35 points in back-to-back playoff games since Karl Malone in 1988.
