EVERY Independence Day, there is confusion on how to translate in Filipino the name of the holiday. Technically, the concept of "independence" is closer to the Filipino term "kasarinlan" (from "pagsasarili"), but we rarely refer to it as "Araw ng Kasarinlan." We refer more to it as "Araw ng Kalayaan," from "laya," which is closer to the concept of "freedom."
Some would say, what's the fuss all about? There is no difference. When you are free, you are independent, and when you are independent, you are free. It is very simple.
