Smartmatic gets wide leeway

Automation deal with Comelec shrouded in secrecy

THE contract of Smartmatic with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) assures that the electronic voting systems provider can fend off any legal challenges it might face.

The 24-page contract to supply the software and machines to automate the elections next year stipulates that 'no motion for reconsideration shall be entertained' by the Comelec if any case is brought against Smartmatic by rival suppliers.
