April 22 was the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, which began in the U.S. in 1970.
The seeds of environmental awareness, however, were planted a decade earlier. In the first half of the 20th century, protecting the environment was not at the forefront of America’s national consciousness. Only very few activists were concerned about major issues such as air pollution and very few Americans knew about–let alone practiced–recycling.
