USING readily available resources as illustrated by Angus McGyverin his popular 1980s TV series is at times, an overstretched solution. This lesson was learned by Aljohn (not his real name), our all-around repairman whom I hired to do a minor job at home. I told him to use all available resources that he can find at the back of the house to repair a kitchen sewage system.

That includes pieces of steel bars, water pipes and cement board as remnants from a roof repair done some time ago. Aljohn accepted the materials. He had no choice. After three hours, he realized he needs half a kilo of wire to keep the reinforced steel bars in place before pouring in fresh concrete.
