THERE seems to be trouble in Los Angeles as the Lakers’ hopes to repeat as NBA champions is now in danger. The Lakers team was the hands-down favorite to win the 2021 Larry O’Brien Championship trophy after it brought in more firepower in the off-season. The additions of 2020 Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell and veteran guard Dennis Schröder deepened LA’s potent bench in the offseason.

After starting the season with a blistering 21-7 win-loss record, the Lakers lost superstar center Anthony Davis in mid-February due to a calf strain and Achilles tendon discomfort. A month later, the Lakers lost LeBron James due to a high ankle sprain. Since the Davis injury, LA has been an anemic 11-13 and has slid down the rankings, barely hanging on to fifth place, with the Portland Trailblazers and Dallas Mavericks hot on its heels. The Lakers currently has a 32-20 record and is now seven games behind Western Conference-leading Utah Jazz in the standings. Davis is set to return in less than a week while James, by the end of April.
