In the coming weeks and months, state agencies and local governments will build hundreds of kilometers of bike lanes in many Philippine cities. This will mean less road space for cars, so that cyclists can have a safe and protected path. The goal is to create a network of bike lanes in every city, so that a person on a bicycle can move from one part of the metropolis to another safely and efficiently.
I anticipate that many of my fellow car owners will oppose this initiative or be skeptical about its merits. This reaction is natural, because fewer car lanes might initially mean worse traffic. However, its benefits for the general public, including car owners, far outweigh the inconvenience.
