ONE can almost hear Jesus’ exasperated lament: If you were willing to listen to John, then why don’t you listen to me? People flocked to John at the time that they had tired of the practices of the old religion. But this time, a light brighter than John’s shines, and people seem to be indifferent.
We have been gifted. Do we even recognize the gift? That is the point of celebrating 500 years of our Christianization. We are not only marking a historical event, like the arrival of Magellan in the Philippines. We are celebrating the graciousness by which God has given us the gift of faith in his Son. The challenge is to recognize it as a gift, because having been born and raised and matured in it, it is no longer appreciated as a gift. Very often the most precious treasures are those we received a long time ago and just have forgotten about, until we discover what treasures they are!
