In 2008 or almost 12-and- a-half years ago, I received a letter from Germany from someone who identified himself as an avid reader of this column; he gave his name but I won’t identify him now to respect his privacy.

He said he highly appreciated my book English Plain and Simple and collected my weekly columns in The Manila Times, but he took issue with my book’s title, saying that it “seems faulty and is likely to be misunderstood.”
