I had intended to devote today’s column to parsing this week’s fresh sources of public annoyance, in particular Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) head Gregorio Honasan 2nd’s praise of the Philippines’ mediocre internet speed. However, that sort of thing is frankly becoming exhausting, and upon reflection, I have begun to suspect that we are all being cleverly trolled by the current Malacañang leaseholder.

President Duterte has been appointing clueless boobs to key positions with increasing regularity; his latest appointment to the DICT is a former cop whose only apparent connection to the concept of “communications” is that he once was accused of (maybe) murdering a publicist, and his choice to lead the scandal-wracked Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) started his new job by publicly announcing that he had no idea what he was doing. These boobs then issued baffling and inane statements, such as Honasan 2nd’s ridiculous assertion that Philippine internet speeds “are not that bad” despite being slower than those in countries such as Syria and Haiti, which keep everyone busy while more serious matters with bigger implications are overlooked.
