Davao village chief nabbed for illegal cockfighting

DAVAO CITY: A barangay (village) chairman and 27 others, including a kagawad (village councilman) were arrested by police for “secretly managing” cockfighting events (tupada) in Barangay Maa inthis city on Sunday afternoon. Davao City Police Office spokesman and Captain Rose Aguilar said Barangay 10-A Captain Marc Cayetano was nabbed along with 27 others, including barangay kagawad Romeo Mamontayo and a member of the Special Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit Active Auxiliary on September 6. Aguilar added that the suspects were caught in the act of engaging in illegal cockfighting during the coronavirus quarantine period. Cockfighting in the city has been banned since the community quarantine mid-March. Recovered were two fighting cocks and cash amounting to P245,734 used for betting. Cayetano and the other suspects will be charged for violation of Presidential Decree (PD) 449 as amended by PD 1602 and Republic Act 11332 in relation to Section 4 of Executive Order 47-A of the Davao city government.
