The real cost of being wild

THERE it goes again; another one bites the dust. Another tamaraw bull was hunted down to death and poached for its meat to illegally sell for profit and gain. Gruesome photos circulated online, where the red, bloody flesh of the hunted tamaraw was being dried under the sun in the supposed land where it should have roamed free.

Last Friday, the Tamaraw Conservation Program, which is the lead organization composed of forest rangers who are tasked to protect and conserve this critically endangered dwarf buffalo species, arrested three poachers for this unforgivable act against our wildlife. Two of the suspected poachers managed to escape back into the forest, escaping the hand of environmental justice. The forest rangers were able to confiscate the homemade shotguns used to kill the tamaraw and get back the sacks of meat of this beloved beast — but never being able to get back the priceless life this creature once had.
