ZAMBOANGA CITY: There were at least eight hotspots here for H5N1 or avian influenza — a viral infection that could infect not only birds, but also humans and other animals, according to Mayor Isabel Climaco-Salazar.

She has ordered the Office of the City Veterinarian (OCV) to immediately conduct surveillance in Manicahan, Saaz River, Zambowood, Sta. Barbara, Mampang, Arena Blanco, Buenavista and Mangusu wetlands, where huge flocks of birds are often seen because of the migratory bird season.
