Education a mission, not meant for elitism

Some years ago, a judicious Dominican priest was asked: “Why is the entrance examination of the University of Santo Tomas so easy? Are you not worried that the quality of your graduates will not be good?”

The priest answered: “Thank you for your concern. I cannot say that the admission test is easy; there are still those who fail it. One thing is for sure, for us, genuine education comes first, and prestige is only a by-product of it. If it is true that we don’t get the best from the entrance examinees, then the university is truly doing a great job at educating and providing the right environment for the students to grow. This is because our students top board and Bar examinations. Our alumni also include many luminaries in their own fields in and out of the country.”
