ON Aug. 5, 2020, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo unveiled an aggressive plan to protect the United States’ critical information and communication technology infrastructure. Touted as the Trump administration’s comprehensive approach to protect the sensitive information of its companies and private citizens, the Clean Network program took off from where the previous 5G Clean Path initiative announced on April 29, 2020 left off. Clean Path required all overseas diplomatic facilities that are using or are planning to use 5G technology to use a “sanitized” communication link when calling back the mainland.
Upcoming 5G mobile network data traffic that will be entering the US diplomatic system will be required to undergo stringent requirements if it has used a foreign made system. It was specifically referring to Chinese telecommunications manufacturer Huawei. Huawei has made significant inroads in the telecoms industry and is present in several countries around the globe, including the major telecommunication companies in the Philippines. Well accepted because of its incredibly attractive pricing models, Huawei made a significant dent in the revenue stream of US-made telecoms equipment.
