More than four years ago, I presented in this column a college student’s anguished letter about being publicly chastised by his Earth and Environmental Science instructor for correcting what he thought was her grammatical mistake on an examination paper. I presented the letter in full with very minor editing but to protect their privacy, I withheld the name of both the letter-writer and of the instructor involved. I also made an effort to avoid judging or moralizing on a matter that wasn’t entirely the province of English grammar and usage.
In retrospect, I would like to share that letter once again as a cautionary tale about the perils of impulsively asserting what’s good or bad English.
