Benguet farmers test new potato varieties to increase yields

NATUBLENG, BUGUIAS, Benguet: Potato farmers in the Cordillera Administrative Region stand to benefit from the variety trials being done in the municipality. The first trials of the potato seedlings produced more than the traditional varieties, according to Conio Copas, a member of the Seeds and Fruits Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SFMPC) in Natubleng, Buguias. This seed variety of the high-valued crop, which has all-year demand, could also be replicated by farmers in the Cordillera. The project is pursued with the support of the SFMPC, Manpat-a Farmers’ Association in Balili, Mankayan under the Potato Industry Development Program of the Department of Agriculture, High Value Crops Development Program with the Prince Edward Island Potato Board and the Embassy of Canada.
