Liability of establishment’s security guard

Dear PAO,

I was involved in a fist fight with the security guard of one hotel. I sustained an injury as a result of the incident because the guard shot my leg. I would like to claim damages against the hotel, but a representative from the latter told me that they were not liable for the action of the guard because he was not one of their employees. Is the hotel correct?
