SEN. Pilar Juliana Cayetano recently brought up a proposal to no longer dub in Filipino TV shows in English. She cited two main reasons for this; one being that children will learn this international language more. “Language is learned earliest at their youngest. The earlier you are exposed to a language, the earlier you can pick it up,” Cayetano said. She even cited data that the English proficiency of our college students are at the same level as those of sixth graders in Malaysia and taxi drivers in Japan.
The second is that dubbing cartoons, for instance, in Filipino takes more time and takes up more resources; thereby, is more costly. She would rather have both invested in playing thousands or even millions of available online materials which, I assume, are better watched by children for entertainment and educational purposes.
