On January 12, 2020, Taal Volcano erupted and subsequently, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued an Alert Level 4 wherein a “hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.” This triggered the suspension of classes and government work in the affected areas. Recently, in an attempt to curb the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the government began the lockdown of Manila and resorted to different kinds of community quarantines thereafter.
In natural calamities, human resource (HR) managers both in the public and private sectors play a crucial role in responding to the needs of its employees in trying times. HR managers should recommend to management the suspension of work so as not to endanger the welfare of employees in commuting to work. This will also allow the employees to prepare and take the necessary precautions to respond to any natural calamity.
