AS Filipinos commemorate their nation’s 122nd anniversary of its declaration of independence, they are no doubt reminded that much of what makes the Philippines unique and gives it distinct economic advantages is its long history as seafaring nation. As it looks ahead to the future, the Philippines’ prospects are bright thanks to its remarkable attributes of tropical island geography, strategic location on the Pacific Rim, and long maritime experience.
