Following an eight-year hiatus brought about by boycotting the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and the 1984 edition in Los Angeles, Soviet and American athletes resumed their battle for supremacy in the XXIV Olympiad held in the Seoul, South Korea.
For the first time, too, since its initial participation in the “Greatest Sports Show on Earth” in 1924 in Paris, the Philippines finally brought home an Olympic gold medal, albeit unofficially, courtesy of bowler Arianne Cerdena.
