The government is set to pay P35 million for renting two ships from Davao City-based businessman Dennis Uy’s 2GO Group that were converted into quarantine vessels to relieve hospitals overwhelmed with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) patients. At the Laging Handa virtual presser, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said the government was renting the two vessels and repurposed them as floating hospitals for overseas Filipino workers by virtue of the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act. Goddes Libiran, assistant Transporation secretary for communications, said in a Viber message that the cost of renting each ship was originally more than P120 million, but the 2GO Group decided to lower the amount as an act of good faith. The vessels have been operational since early April.
