Army picks first female battalion chief

CAMP SANG-AN, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur: For the first time in the history of the Philippine Army, a female officer was appointed commander of the 1st Infantry Division (1ID) based in this 100-hectare mountainous military camp.

1ID commander Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio named Lt. Col. Janet Laurena as replacement of Lt. Col. Norberto Agbay as commander of the Headquarters Service. Agbay was reassigned as head of the Division’s Governance and Strategy Management Office. Laurena’s as head of the Headquarters and Headquarters Service Battalion is in charge of the camp administration, security and personnel support.
