IN the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to screen candidates for internships and entry-level posts, to spot wildfires, and to weed out fake restaurant reviews so that unwitting diners don’t end up in a joint that is all hype, no heart. It has also been used to create deepfakes, to unintentionally box out women for engineer and coder positions, and to spew hate speech on social media.

Even though its ability to make lives easier for people has been proven time and again, AI’s societal impact is still largely a mixed bag.
