Almost a decade after its introduction, the mandate of the K to12 curriculum has remained intact: it has been designed to align our country’s basic education curriculum to that of global standards, by adding two years of senior high school to the four-year secondary education and another year for mandated kindergarten.

In 2011, K to 12 introduced the universal kindergarten and in 2012, schools started implementing curriculum decongestion. Public schools also began having half-day classes for first-graders, introducing the mother tongue as the medium of instruction.
