THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has dug in its heels over the controversy it has caused concerning popular motorcycle ride-hailing service Angkas. While we would certainly acknowledge that proper regulation of public transportation services is a necessity, we believe that the LTFRB has lost sight of its real mission and is doing far more harm than good.

The current dispute pitting the regulator against Angkas and the public began earlier this month when the LTFRB announced it would limit the number of drivers for the service in and around Metro Manila to just 10,000 per operator and that two new competing service providers, called JoyRide and Move It, would be introduced. In addition to the 10,000 drivers in Metro Manila, each of the three operators would be allowed to deploy 3,000 in Metro Cebu.
