GEORGE Siao Kian Ty, the Chinese immigrant who founded one of the country’s largest universal banks, the Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. or Metrobank, died on Friday at the age of 86.

Metrobank announced the passing of its founder in a statement to the press, saying the banking magnate and Toyota’s Philippine partner “was surrounded by family and loved ones” at the time of his death.
