With Tamaraw Month celebrated in October, it is but fitting to give recognition to the late Nestor Gacillos who was dedicated to the protection of the last strongholds of Bubalus mindorensis or tamaraw, the Mindoro bleeding-heart pigeon and other threatened species as a member of the Important Biodiversity Area Monitoring System (IBAMS) team.

“A decade ago, ancient trees stood tall beside each other, but now there are huge distances between them. The calls of wild deer are no longer heard and hornbills are not easily seen like before,” Gacillos once said.
